How Vastly Improved Technology Has Made Exploratory Laparoscopy Possible
Exploratory laparoscopy can help surgeons make a final choice as to which operation they should be carrying out, and which method they should be using. These choices are not always as cut and dried as they should be. Diagnosis is the most important part of any medical treatment, yet it is the one which is so often taken for granted. Unless you know exactly what the problem is before you go to treat a patient, you run the risk of making the condition even worse, and could even cause an iatrogenic disorder.
The great potential of laparoscopic instruments in diagnosis is no less than their potential in treating illness once it has been diagnosed. This potential is only recent, as there have been many decades where medical practitioners have been unable to do what they knew was perfectly possible because the tools to carry out the tasks were simply not available. The pioneers of laparoscopic medicine went through decades of frustration because technology had not given them the tools they needed to work with.
The situation did not improve significantly until electronic technology began to improve cameras. At this point, surgery could be carried out on many of the larger organs in the abdominal region, and diagnosis also became easier. We started to see the introduction of exploratory laparoscopy, as it became more possible to bring back pictures from inside the human body. Even in cases where technology did not yet permit a condition to be treated with keyhole surgery, success rates of open surgery could be increased by improving diagnoses.
The ability to explore the inner body using a highly advanced camera can be useful in so many ways. Firstly, there is often the need to confirm a diagnosis made using more traditional methods such as blood tests. Often, a blood test can only give an indication, albeit a very strong one, of what is wrong with a patient. Having corroboratory evidence in visual form can give the physician a lot more confidence in dealing with the case, whether surgery is needed or not.
Another great benefit of pelvic laparoscopy is that it can show any potential complications which may arise with any procedure do to the individual characteristics of the body. If there is an internal organ which is slightly closer to another one than is usually the case, it can make the surgery difficult. If you know about this in advance, you can adjust your procedure slightly to compensate. Most importantly of all, a pelvic laparoscopy can show whether there are any other complications which need to be addressed at the same time. This can save the need for a second operation at a later date, making recovery far more likely. Now that so many procedures are possible, there are many reasons to carry out an exploratory laparoscopy.
